Evelyne Axell enters Mumok in Vienna

The jury of the Austrian Ludwig Foundation has selected a work by Evelyne Axell, “Le Glacier”, to be part of the permanent collection of Mumok, the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna.

“Le glacier”, 1972

It is a rather special work because it is part of Evelyne Axell’s “nature and environment” period, from 1971 to 1972, when the struggle for feminism gave way to a struggle for ecology and the preservation of our planet and its nature.

In the tradition of works such as “The Monkey”, “The Flight” or “The Blue Elephant”, this Plexiglas painting represents a mountainous landscape that is still preserved and pure.

Picture of Jägersee taken by Philippe Axell in 1970.

But in reality it is not an imaginary landscape. It is a very specific place, the Jägersee, located near the small village of Kleinarl-im-Pongau in Austria where her son, Philippe, 13 years old, was in summer camp in 1970. He took a picture of this lake and the surrounding mountains. It is from this photo that Evelyne Axell created this work, “Le glacier”. It is probably the only Austrian landscape ever represented by a Pop Art artist! It has now found its place among the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna.
