Evelyne Axell reconnects with the German public who knew her well. She was exhibited in 2006 in Berlin at the Television Tower and at the Belgian Embassy, then at the Kunstverein in Hamburg in 2010, followed by a major retrospective in 2011 at the Abteiberg Museum in Mönchengladbach.

Konig 02This year the König Gallery is organizing a large exhibition “Venus, Leda & Mona Lisa” in Berlin in two locations; the Johann König Gallery in Dessauerstrasse and the Chapel St. Agnes in Alexandrinnenstrasse, from 27 April to 27 May 2018. The curator is Angela Stief who also curated the first European exhibition on women Pop Art artists in 2010 in Vienna; “Power Up, Female Pop Art”.

For her, Evelyne Axell’s (1935 – 1972) work has reached cult status. Her work can be seen as one of the highlights of pop art – an art form, whose protagonists only gradually find recognition. Despite being on exhibition in renowned institutions such as Centre Pompidou in Paris, Tate Modern in London, Brooklyn Museum in New York and Kunsthalle Wien, Axell’s work is representative of an era whose potential is only recently being acknowledged.

For this Berlin exhibition many collectors have agreed to lend their works but there are also some unpublished works recently rediscovered by Evelyne Axell’s son that have been restored and are presented to the public for the first time.
